Welcome to the Mrs. M. Elizabeth Chitty Media Center at Plainfield High School. Located on the second floor, we have a large collection of resources for students, teachers and faculty alike to use whenever needed.  Please visit this website often as a way to keep up with new materials, resources and events at the media center and the rest of the school.  

Murela Elizabeth Chitty (1928 - 1999)

Murela Elizabeth Chitty,  was a well respected and appreciated member of the Plainfield community. Mrs. Chitty was a longtime librarian who addressed racial segregation in Plainfield by creating reading programs such as The Plainfield Reading Program and founding The Black Librarians Network of New Jersey.  M. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania she later relocated to New York and attended library school at Columbia University, one of the most esteemed library programs at the time. 

Mrs. Chitty worked for many years at the Plainfield Public Library and later as a librarian for the Department of Veteran Affairs. While at the VA, Mrs. Chitty helped implement bibliotherapy programs to help rehabilitate veterans. Mrs. Chitty was also well known as a three term president of the Plainfield Board of Education stepping down in 1977.  

Mrs. Chitty was also an active member of many organizations including St. Mary's church in Plainfield where she was a Eucharistic Minister and was a Lay Oblate with the Order of Saint Benedict. She was also a sister of ΔΣΘ Sorority, Incorporated.
